North Beach: The Italian Heart of San Francisco
Published in Hardcover by Tioga Pub Co (October, 1988)
Author: Richard H. Dillon
Average review score:

Suzette's Review
What a beautiful book covering San Francisco California and done with Photograph's. Teh Photographer captures the joy and struggle along with the struggle of picking yourself up and starting all over after the most desvating earth quake the city had even seen.

Beautiful photographs of historic San Francisco .
J.B. Monaco was an Italian-Swiss photographer working in North Beach, San Francisco's Italian center, around the turn of the century. This book, written by Richard Dillon and documented with Monaco's photographs, gives the reader a true feeling for one of the early Italian American districts on the West Coast. Monaco's photos bring the book to life, each of them like a slice of time from turn of the century San Francisco. His images of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 are of particular interest, many of which capture images never seen in any photographic collection. The book is a must for anyone intereseted in San Francisco (and particularly North Beach) history, and the early Italian-American experience in the United States.

People Raising: A Practical Guide to Raising Support
Published in Paperback by Moody Publishers (August, 1993)
Author: William P. Dillon
Average review score:

Deputation at its finest
For missionaries that are responsible for raising their own support, this book is a must. Regardless if you are new to mission work and new to support raising or a veteran missionary with a continuing need to raise support; this book has definite and practical guidelines and tips that anyone will understand. The text not only brings the Biblical basis for raising support and deputation to light, but also illustrates how to train yourself.

The design of the book shows you, in example format, real life scenarios and encourages study within a self-paced atmosphere. Because of its design, many people can come together and use the group study portion of the book, which allows for discussions and other interaction. The examples are clear and in step-by-step format. It even shows you how to write letters and word them to be more effective.

I highly recommend this book to any and all missionaries interested in gathering financial or prayer support. Fund and support raising is not something I was excited about until after I finished this book. I was so pleased with People Raising, I recommended it to several of my close missionary friends who are in need of financial support.

Excellent, step-by-step guide for raising financial support.
Mr. Dillon's step-by-step guide to raising financial support for missionary service is top notch. It is filled with useful ideas for an individual raising support, or for a development fundraising professional responsible for raising financial contributions for their organization. I have not seen a more effective tool for support raising and I highly recommend Mr. Dillon's book. In fact, we at Food for the Hungry use the book consistently.

Rain of Ruin: A Photographic History of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Published in Hardcover by Brasseys, Inc. (July, 1995)
Authors: Donald M. Goldstein, Katherine V. Dillon, and J. Michael Wenger
Average review score:

Chilling
I just received this book in the mail today, however I have all ready read half of it and have found it very stirring.
Before my recent studies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki I did not have any idea of the devestation that went on over there. This is the most visual account I've seen to date.
A chilling account to one of the worst mistakes in American history.

The Choice That Saved a Million Lives
THE ONLY BOOK OF IT'S TYPE!!! The complete pictorial history of the weapon that changed the way mankind thinks of his enemy and war. Goldstein, in previous books, has given the world the most complete picture of the start of the War in the Pacific,by telling us both sides of how and why the events occurred. Now he ends the war with the Manhatten project and the dropping of the two a-bombs. This book is the only one I know of that presents the effects on Nagaski, the forgotten city. As Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima have become SISTER CITIES you need to have "Rain of Ruin" as the definitive companion to your Pearl Harbor collection.

Rap A Tap Tap
Published in Hardcover by Blue Sky Press (September, 2002)
Authors: Leo Dillon and Diane Dillon
Average review score:

A Tribute to the Greatest Tap Dancer of All Time.....
As Leo and Diane Dillon tell the reader in their illuminating Afterword: "Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (1878-1949) is know as the greatest tap dancer of all time. His fame has reached mythic proportions. He had charm and charisma and, it was said "He talked with his feet." His rhythms were so intricate and fast it was impossible for other dancers to repeat some of them..." The Dillon's introduce a whole new generation to the sheer joy of Mr Bojangles, a dancer who made "art with his feet" in this deceptively simple and creative picture book biographical sketch. Their short rhyming text with its engaging and repetitive "Rap a tap tap-think of that!" is filled with rhythm and motion. But it's their clever, bold, bright, and elegant illustrations that make this book stand out and sparkle, and youngsters will feel the passion and energy with each page turn as they watch Bojangles almost dance off the pages. Perfect for little ones 3-7, Rap A Tap Tap is a playful and captivating, interactive celebration of both Bill Robinson and tap dance...Rap a tap tap-think of that!

Wonderfully Rhythmic
Bojangles, a historical tapper is the center of this book. Told in rhythmic rhymes, the story takes you with Bojangles as he taps throughout his city. A great book to read in the music classroom. Your students can chant with you or just keep the steady beat with their tappin' feet! Excellent choice!

The Sayings of Shigeo Shingo: Key Strategies for Plant Improvement (Japanese Management)
Published in Hardcover by Productivity Press (June, 1987)
Authors: Shigeo Shingo and Andrew P. Dillon
Average review score:

the best ever writen book on machine improvement
Shigeo Shingo details the approach to improve unefficient equipments. The technical approach and the people change management are combined and explained in numerous convincing examples. This book is a must to anyone starting as manufacturing engineer (project, maintenance production ...)

Excellent thought provoking book!
Shigeo Shingo is truly one of the most under rated quality gurus out there. His methods and genius rank with Deming and Juran, but are much more easily applied. If you are interested in SMED, Constraint Management, Poka-Yoke or continuous improvement READ THIS BOOK

School for Young Riders
Published in Hardcover by Arco Pub (September, 1973)
Author: Jane M. Dillon
Average review score:

One of the best equitation books out there!
This book is great for riders of all skill levels. All techiques and concepts are explained well and in an interesting and informative manner. Mrs. Jane Marshall Dillon had an excellent riding school, where I spent many summers riding, teaching lessons and working around the barn. I sure learned alot from her and her book!

One of the best old books
This is a true classic! Although development has sadly taken over this real school, it is forever in this book! Tests at the end of the chapters challenge the reader to see how much they have learned. Although an "old" book, the same basics apply to riding nowadays. A must read for the beginner and fun for the experienced!

St. Irenaeus of Lyons: Against the Heresies (Ancient Christian Writers, No 55)
Published in Hardcover by Paulist Press (September, 1992)
Authors: Dominic J. Unger, Walter J. Burghardt, Thomas Comerford Lawler, John J. Dillon, and Irenaeus
Average review score:

Unger's Intricate Piece of Work
With an excellent array of notes explaining his decisions in translating the thirty-one chapters of Book One of Irenaes's Against the Heresies, Unger has produced an admirable and accessible scholarly edition. Any translation is simultaneously an interpretation, and Unger has elucidated his choices in a minute and clear manner. Moreover, his introduction is quite helpful in setting the scene regarding Irenaeus's audience, style, and purpose.

One line made me buy!
To anyone interested in reading up on the earliest of heresies, this is the book for them! Heresy is when a post-baptized Catholic, in Christ, turns from the original teachings of the Catholic church of Christ, and decides to accept the man-made doctrines of other denominations by excluding the Sacred Traditions of our fathers (appointed by Christ). The bible warns of man-made doctrines! Protestantism and it's branch offs, accepts man made traditions (ie. scripture only). In turning to these new, truly man-made doctrines, they have chosen to divorce the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that is Christ's. To be Catholic and then turn from it, is divorce. Protestants of course allow members to divorce and remarry. It's ironic that this is how their church was started. Rather than staying in the marriage and fixing it, divorce is chosen. However, Jesus promised HIS church to be one and united. For those in search of the real truth, the true Church of Christ, one needs only to search the history of the first actual, physical church of Christ to accept the Sacred value of the Catholic Church traditions. This book is just what the physician (Jesus) orders. Find out where the traditions came from and how Heresies began. In this book, Irenaeus proceeds to list the succession of the Bishops of Rome to his own day! He adds that "in this order, and by this succession, the ecclesiastical TRADITION from the apostles, and the preaching of truth have come down to us" I say, the study of Church history, is the end of Protestantism! Read! Your salvation depends on it!! The Catholic Church is the ONLY church NOT founded by a sinner! Do the research! Start here!

Western Quotations: Famous Words from the American West

good book
Richard Dillons book was helpful since generally people dont need a key word and it is quite useful to look up by author or subject because generally people are looking for an author or a subject and not just one word... this was an extremely helpful book.

GREAT FIND!
I was in need of a book with western quotations for a report and Richard DIllon had any quote that I could ever want about the west! Mr. Dillon is an amazing writer as I found out when I read his other book, Arizonas Amazing Towns. What a wonderful author

What Am I: Looking Through Shapes at Apples and Grapes
Published in Hardcover by Blue Sky Press (AZ) (September, 1994)
Authors: N. N. Charles, Leo Dillon, and Diane Dillon
Average review score:

What Am I? Looking through shapes at apples and grapes.
This book is colourful and interactive. It allows an educator to tailor the book to it's audience of toddlers to school age.

Perennial Favorite
My grandchildren, ages 4 and 18 months, never tire of thisbook! It holds their interest more than any other book they own. Although the recommended age is 4-8, at mcuh earlier ages they loved the vivid colors, shapes, and illustrations. The cut-out shapes fascinate them, whether for a game of peek-a-boo, or the action involved in flipping the page and seeing a different picture behind each cutout. As my 4-year-old learns to read, he now enjoys the book at a different level but just as much. The illustrations are beautiful and even hold my interest with repeated readings, something I can't say for other children's books. In instituting values, we also like the message of diversity, which the children perceive easily as they recognize and relate to the hands of people of different colors. If you're only buying one children's book as a gift, for the children's own library, or to keep for your granchild's visits, this is an absolute must for ages 1 to 8.

The advertising man
Published in Unknown Binding by Harper's Magazine Press ()
Author: John Dillon
Average review score:

Funny and Brilliant ¿in that order.
He's an ad guy. He puts in late hours coming up with witty headlines. He works with the some of the smartest people in New York - and the dumbest. It's a demanding job that takes more then it gives back...even if it means taking away your entire life!

Most people in advertising run into the same road block as this main character (Is this work really important? And if so...Why?) Our hero in this book illustrate a common cynicism that makes you think, laugh and cry. Although the mood is dark, the ideas brought forth in this novel are very enlightening.

On the surface this book is about the perils of working in advertising. But deep down this book is about the perils of working in ANY job that demands you put more in your professional life then you do in your personal job. Although profoundly funny, this book is a reminder of what's really important in life.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a job to quit.
